'Lazy' artist will wow you with his impressive output

Julien Roux churns out wondrous illustrations, murals and children's books.

Usually referring to oneself as lazy isn't meant as a compliment. But French artist Julien Roux sees this as the most apt description of his style.

"There is something very lazy in my character and in my work, I think," he told From The Grapevine during a visit to his studio in Israel. "It's not a show-off style. It's very minimal, rough even. And clumsy even sometimes, I must say."

This laziness is an essential component of his work, infusing it with an ambiguity that leaves much of its meaning open to interpretation.

"This is the sort of work I like. It leaves a lot to the imagination," he said.

Make no mistake, Roux's sluggishness doesn't extend to his creative output, which is substantial and has been rewarded with the high-profile placement of his illustrations in publications such as New York magazine, Time Out New York and France's acclaimed culinary magazine Le Fooding. He has also done murals and wall drawings, exhibited at galleries in Israel, Europe and the United States, and has published five children's books.

Today, much of his work in the form of drawings and prints can be found at his studio where he's been since 2008, when he moved from Brooklyn to Israel with his partner, an Israeli, and their young son.

Beyond the studio, his signature style remains a visible part of many high profile businesses around the world, as he is often enlisted to reimagine their visual identities. In fact, he recently completed a project for the M Cafe chain in Los Angeles to do just that. He's also done work for Pellegrino, Nestle and many other recognizable brands.

Roux says he enjoys life in Israel, especially the sun and the beaches of Tel Aviv. He enjoys traveling now and again as well for additional inspiration for his work.

In the meantime he's busy manning his little shop, working on a new children's book and adding a bit of beauty to whatever it is he puts his pen to.
