Acoustic cover band puts new spin on popular singles
You won't recognize Led Zeppelin's 'Black Dog' when you hear DNM's Mediterranean rendition.
The art of a good cover song relies on an artist's ability to transform it into something new – and that's exactly what the Israeli band DNM has achieved with some of our all-time favorite songs, from classics like Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog" to more recent hits like Rihanna's "Umbrella." Better yet, each of the trio's songs is completely different from the other – showcasing an impressive range of styles.
For a Mediterranean-style cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog," DNM draws on popular musical elements of the region – Spanish guitar, tambourine and mystical-sounding vocals. It's the sort of song that would give you chills even if it didn't have the familiar catchy lyrics of the original hit.
"Umbrella" becomes a timeless classic with this delightfully jazzy rendition. Rihanna's song is almost unrecognizable with the acoustic bass and sultry vocals.
The Police's "Every Breath You Take" evokes a whole new feeling with this Indie-embellished acoustic version. The mixture of vintage vocals, guitar mastery and a stand-up bass somehow gives the song a much more romantic context, and an all-around dreamy atmosphere.
Covers of our favorite songs are exciting enough when they are spot-on copycats, but inventive interpretations add something else to the equation. Hearing our beloved tunes a different way sheds a new light, adds a fresh tone and helps us to think about classics in a new way – and DNM proves that can be a very, very good thing.
