How the world is celebrating the return of 'Game of Thrones'
From delicious themed cocktails to touring exhibitions, here are five fun ways to mark the return of the hit HBO series.
The return of HBO's "Game of Thrones" is right around the corner, and fans of the fantasy drama series are celebrating around the world in unique and festive ways. Since its debut in 2011, the television series has evolved into an international phenomenon – winning dozens of awards, catapulting its creator to Tolkien-esque stature, and sparking an off-shoot of podcasts, websites, and merchandise.
Here are five examples of fun drinks, events, and sounds to get you in a celebratory mood for Season Five's arrival on April 12th.
1. Bloody-Good Cocktails
With early reviews hinting at a darker tone compared to past seasons, these themed cocktails may lighten the mood. Fan favorites making the rounds include "The Mother of Dragons" (which, naturally, features some heat), "The Kingslayer" (in Lannister red, if course), "Cersei’s Sangria" (don't trust it), and "The Tyrion Lannister Shot" (small, but packs a punch).
2. Game of Thrones: The Exhibition

Want to sit on an exact replica of the Iron Throne? Or virtually patrol the frozen fortifications atop the Wall? The official Game of Throne exhibition offers a unique opportunity to view more than 70 authentic props from the series, interact with famous set pieces, and pledge allegiance to one of Westeros’ Houses. Over the next several months, the massive exhibit will visit five international cities, including Amsterdam, Tel Aviv, and Madrid.
"It seems like everyone is talking about 'Game of Thrones' here," shares Carla Sprung, one of the show's many fans in Israel. "My husband and I watch it and many of our friends enjoy it as well," she said, adding that the exhibition will likely be a big draw for fans when it arrives in Israel next week.
3. Game of Thrones

If the various noble houses of "Game of Thrones" ever decide to hash out their differences over baseball, rather than swords, giants, and dragons, the uniforms may look similar to the Durham Bulls. The minor league baseball team decided to go all-in for their upcoming "Game of Thrones Night," designing special-edition uniforms emblazoned with their bull logo and the words “Hitteth Bull Winneth Steak."
The team will auction the uniforms after the game later this month. All proceeds will benefit a local youth charity.
4. Brewery Ommegang's "Three-Eyed Raven" Dark Saison

If the cocktails listed sound about as good as a dip in Blackwater Bay, perhaps a taste of Brewery Ommegang's latest "GOT"-themed brew would better fit the bill? Titled "Three-Eyed Raven," the fifth incarnation from Ommegang's partnership with HBO, is a dark beer featuring a "spicy, fruity character" with "lingering herbal hops and dry rye notes." If none of that makes any sense, just know that early reviews have already pegged it a winner. Look for a limited release in the U.S. on April 6th, as well as several launch parties to celebrate with friends, foes, and creatures alike.
5. The Game of Thrones Mixtape, Volume II
Featuring a wide range of artists, HBO's 'GOT Mixtape' includes audio clips from the show merged with original music. (Photo: HBO)
Need a groove to get you in the mood for the return of Season 5? HBO partnered with artists like Melanie Fiona, Estelle, Snoop Dogg, and others to create the latest GOT Mixtape. The 15 songs, which you can stream here, feature sound effects and clips from the series intertwined with beats and original lyrics.
